It was an honor to share the Claire’s Place project with our viewers. The visionary for the project, Claire Wineland, was a complete joy and inspiration to work with. Claire lived with cystic fibrosis her entire life. At the age of 13 she founded Claire’s Place Foundation, Inc, a non-profit providing support to children and families affected by cystic fibrosis (CF). Zappos, the project donor, reached out to Design Studio Blue to bring Claire’s vision for a joyful children’s hospital playroom to life.
Through conversations with Claire and viewing her sketchbook ideas, DSB took the essence of Claire’s thoughts and colorful drawings and created a design to bring it all to life. The design includes a desert campfire corner, cozy reading nook, interactive 3-D constellation wall, Lego building wall, arts and crafts tables, and art display rails.
Design Studio Blue is humbled to have had the opportunity to work with Claire and blessed to be given the honor of bringing her vision to life. Claire’s legacy will continue through her foundation. Using Claire’s own hand sketches, the design team brought in PS Art Consulting to bring her vision to life with custom murals, 3D custom painted planets and a dedication plaque to Claire herself. The playroom will carry on her legacy of compassion by providing pediatric patients with a bright, functional space for a wide range of activities, games and play therapy alongside the hospital’s child life specialists.
Thank you to Zappos, University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, and Melissa Nordquist Yeager for sharing your time and talent to make this project possible.
